CL from 2NE1 may start a solo career in the United States this coming September.
In recent few days, YG Entertainment's CEO Yang Hyun-suk updated his Instagram (fromyg) with a photo showing CL in the process of filming a new music video, hinting the imminent debut of CL as a solo artist in the United States.
Adding to the hype is that CL is featured in a recent issue of the Rolling Stone magazine, in an article titled '10 New Artists You Need to Know: August 2015'. The list features the top 10 hottest music artists this month according to music chart and online popularity. Featured artists, together with CL, includes Bjarki, Cold Beat, Boogie, Travis Mills, Eskimeaux, Grave Pleasures, Halsey, Tunde Olaniran and Snoh Aalegra. As you can see, CL is the only Asian artist on the list!
Rolling Stone introduced CL as South Korea's hottest MC rapper, who calls herself 'The Baddest Female' from her hit song. Rolling Stone also set high expectations for CL entering the U.S. music industry, as she will be working with manager, Scooter Braun, who has helped high-profile artists such as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, gain popularity in the early stages.
In an interview by Rolling Stone, CL said that 'I don't want to categorize myself as a rapper, I don't want to put myself in a specific genre as I do many things, from singing, rapping, to dancing'. Regarding whether CL can successfully make her way into the U.S. market, CL commented saying that 'I don't want to bare too much responsibilities, for example I don't want to feel that I'm representing Asia. But I do want to be successful in the U.S., because no Koreans after Psy made it here. I do however like to represent Asian girls and will like to be an idol for American girls too. But that's not my primary goal. In the end, I just want to do the things I like and music that I love'. Her response strongly expressed her love for music.
On the other hand, CL is currently working with Skrillex, Will.i.am, Diplo and others on their Mad Decent Block Party.
